The current age to legally purchase and consume alcoholic beverages throughout the United States is 21. This came about in 1984 when Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which persuaded the individual states to change their minimum drinking age from 18 to a new drinking age of 21 in order to prevent young adults from driving while intoxicated. If a state were to decline this act, the government would deny their access of 10 percent of government issued funds intended for federal highway appropriation. Aside from the obvious bribe at hand, author John M. McCardell Jr. points out to us that the new law simply doesn’t make a difference. In some cases it makes things worse. The article “Commentary: Drinking age of 21 doesn’t work” denies that this age requirement is creating a safer and healthier environment for Americans. The article shows that even though the government was trying to stop people from drinking and driving, the real problem at hand is binge drinking. In fact, 60 percent of deaths involving alcohol occur OFF of the roads according to the National Institute of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse. Basically, the McCardell is trying to drill into our minds that the most recently appointed drinking age hardly fixed the problem at hand (18, 19, and 20 year olds from driving while intoxicated), but it created other problems which in the long run could seemingly be much worse in the future.
