Bencosme 1 Anthony Bencosme English 1102 Dionne Irving 15 Apr 2010 Extra Credit Terrance Hayes is a poet that writes with some humor, but likes to be serious at the same time. I found this true after listening to his poems. Many of them are humorous and easy to listen to, but if you look for a deeper meaning you’ll often be surprised. The first poem he read was called The Golden Shovel , and was based after the other poem We Are Cool . He stated that the poem was about memories he had of when he was young and would go with his dad to play pool. The next poem he read was called Shakur , which he stated meant “thanks be to God”, and after that he read a funny story entitled Last Train to Africa , which was about the time he went to a drive through strip club. The other poems Terrance read include Arbor for Butch, New York Poem, and The Rose Has Teeth. I think Terrance is a very interesting poet and has a great mentality. He stated that he writes with the mentality of “one more block”, and that he is obsessed with time. I noticed he had on two watches, and when asked if time affects his writing, he stated that he always has time on his mind. Terrance is a great writer that, in my opinion, managed to conform to today’s style of poetry but also keeps the old school seriousness. Bencosme 2...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
