University of California, Davis Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science ECH 157 Process Dynamics and Control Ahmet Palazoglu FINAL EXAM Fall 2009 (Open book and no notes) 1. (5 pts) An alkaline wastewater stream is generated as part of an electronic assembly process, and its pH needs to be neutral before it can be discharged to the sewer system. While most applications use sulfuric acid as the neutralizing agent, recent technologies use diffused CO 2 for safety and economic reasons. A schematic of such a process, with an overflow weir for discharge, is given below: wastewater stream discharge stream CO 2 gas State the control objective for this process. Identify the output variable, and indicate the type of sensor used. Identify the manipulated variable and the disturbance. For feedback control of this process, draw a detailed block diagram of the closed-loop system. Show all relevant transfer functions and the pertinent variables. (Note that not all block diagram elements may appear in the above schematic). 2.
