Andrew Matuzak MGT429 Case 7: Carrefour in Asia In the case of Carrefour, there were many opportunities and threats posed by some of the larger countries in Asia. Taiwan, for example, was the country where Carrefour opened its first hypermarket because of the tremendous potential of the Taiwanese market, which had been virtually untapped by hypermarkets. This potential was created through Taiwan’s size, its cultural diversity, and its large population. However, there were threats to Carrefour with opening a hypermarket in Taiwan. These threats were the different business approaches of the Taiwanese people – especially in regards to negotiations, poor management of the supply chain, and communication boundaries created through the use of both the Chinese and English languages within the company. In South Korea, the challenge for Carrefour to expand came in the form of local competition, with many local conglomerates investing a large amount of capital in local industry to keep hypermarkets out of the country.
