MGT 429 Case Write-Up 1 The package express delivery industry has drastically evolved since the inception of Federal Express in the early 1970s. Before Federal Express entered the industry, the vast majority of the freight being transported in the United States was through surface transport, with less than 2% of the total by air transport. Most of these carriers were major passenger airlines which carried cargo on both all-cargo planes and additional cargo on passenger planes. The 1970s saw many companies enter the industry including Federal Express, which revolutionized the industry by offering an overnight delivery service using air transport. Airborne Express, United Parcel Service, and the United States Postal Service were also key players in the package express delivery industry at this time. By the early 1980s, with the introduction of the overnight letter service, the industry transformed from being a channel for goods to being a distributor of information, mainly in the form of professional documents, letters, contracts, and drawings. The following years, from the later 1980s to the mid 1990s, saw a shift in demand from overnight delivery to second-day delivery services. As well, in these years,
