Unformatted text preview: A Report on the Best-in-Class Organization: By: MGT324 29 March 2010 Heartland Health 2 Executive Summary In this paper, we will describe the organizations that make up Heartland Health, including the services they offer and their processes for improvement. Key metrics and diagrams are used to help clarify these processes and the effects they have had on the organization and in the community. This paper summarizes the trends for continuous improvement that top organizations are utilizing and the major challenges being faced in the healthcare industry. As well, it will also detail Heartland Healths actions to reduce the effects of these challenges. Heartland Health 3 Description of Organization Heartland Health is a non-profit hospital dedicated to quality patient care and serving patients in the Southwest Missouri area. Two community hospitals merged in 1984 to become a state-of-the-art hospital and to better serve the sounding community. They have been using metrics to determine their state of quality and to continually improve their processes. In 2009 it received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award which is the nation's highest honor for quality and organizational excellence. The hospital index, which compares over 45,000 hospitals in the United States, gave them a rating of 99% for quality patient care when comparing them to other hospitals around the country and put them in the top 100 hospitals in the nation. As well, www.whynotthebest.com, sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund, has rated Heartland Health within the top 1% of hospitals in overall care (Malcolm, 44). Heartland Regional Medical Center offers many different medical services. Heartland has several different branches including Heartland Clinic , the Heartland Foundation , and Community Health Improvement Solutions . While their primary focus is making the surrounding community healthier and stronger, they each have their own unique benefits. Heartland Clinic is a group of 107 physicians who serve the community with medical assistance. The Heartland Foundation seeks to provide value to its patients, insurance members, and community by operating an outstanding organization focused on clinical quality, safety, community collaboration, and financial stability (Malcolm, XI). And finally, Community Health Improvement Solutions offers affordable insurance options to the surrounding area.
