The purpose of the experiment was to synthesize and analyze the compound potassiumferric oxalateK3Fe(C2O4)3•3H2O. The analysis was to figure out the concentration and percentyield of iron and oxalate. The experiment was done over the course of three weeks and alsoinvolved the spectrophotometric analysis, which demonstrates the light absorption andtransmittance, and redox titration which was used to determine the composition of thecompound.It determines the purity and by finding the percent of Fe and the percent of CH in theproduct. By preparing two solutions, one must perform a spectrophotometric analysis of iron,prepare a standard solution of oxalic acid, and analyze the oxalate content of the product.The first part of the experiment was to differentiate the ferrous oxalate that was yellowand insoluble compared to other products that were soluble. The potassium ferric oxalate wassynthesized based off of the balanced chemical equation:Fe(NH4)2(SO4)x 6H2O +H2C2O4FeC2O42H2O + 2(NH4)HSO4+4H2OThe second part of the experiment was oxidized by hydrogen peroxide in the presence ofoxalate ion to produce potassium ferric oxalate. The balanced equation was2FeC2O4•2H2O (s) + H2O2 (aq) + H2C2O4 (aq) 3K2C2O4 (aq) → 2K3Fe(C2)4)3•3H20(s)In the third experiment, the products were analyzed by different methods. The amount ofoxalate ion was determined by the titration of a solution of potassium permanganate againststandard solution of oxalic acid. The oxalate was the only one that reacted with permanganateions. The balanced equation is:5C2O4^-2 + 2MnO4 ^- + 16H^+ → 10CO2 (g) + 2Mn^2+ + 8H2OTo determine the analysis of the concentration of iron in the sample, use
spectrophotometry. The iron was made into a new substance by using phenanthroline moleculesand produced a dark red color. The reduction of the iron was performed with hydroxylaminehydrochloride.
