Photosynthesis is the process of capturing the energy of sunlight and converting the inorganic molecules of carbon dioxide and water into high-energy organic molecules. This action, in plants, happens in the chloroplasts in two steps: light-dependant and light-independent reactions. In the light-dependant reaction, light invokes electrons in chlorophyll and transfer the active electrons to electron transport systems. The light-independent reactions happen in a cycle of chemical reactions called the Calvin cycle. According to Audesirk, Audesirk, & Byers, (2005) this cycle contains three steps: carbon fixation, synthesis of glyceraldehydes-3 phosphate (G3P), and the generation of ribulose biphosphate (RuBP). The first step in the Calvin cycle is carbon fixation. During this step, carbon from C0 2 is assimilated into a larger molecule. The cycle then uses rubisco, a plant protein which fixes carbon in photosynthetic organisms and accepts oxygen in place of carbon dioxide dictionary.com (2011), to combine the CO 2 molecule with the RuBP molecule which produces
