Legal and Ethical Environments of Business 2 Abstract Society has a huge impact on how companies run their business. Customs are different in the United States than they are elsewhere, and what may be taken as common place here, can be completely unacceptable in Japan. There are also major differences in the level of government involvement and legalities behind how businesses must be run. This paper will compare Toyota and General Motors and discuss the impact these differences have on how each company runs their business.

Legal and Ethical Environments of Business 3 Toyota is Japan’s most prominent automotive manufacturer based out of Toyota City, Aichi, Japan, and General Motors (GM) based out of Detroit, MI holds that title in the United States. In 2009 Toyota sold 7,567,000 vehicles worldwide. GM has not released their 20009 sales numbers, but according to abc.go.com their sales numbers dropped 33% from in 2009, which would bring their 2009 numbers from 8,350,000 down to approximately 5,511,000. In that same time frame Toyota produced 7,051,000 vehicles worldwide compared to GM’s 6,503,000. GM employees 204,000 people worldwide and Toyota employees 350,590 people worldwide. There are many differences when dealing with international business firms.
