EDU/WC Writing Consultations The hallmark of our work is the face-to—face writing consultation, where a trained consultant and a writer sit down together to discuss a draft of the writer’s work. _ These sessions help writers shape their writing for their purposes and audiences. Writing consultations are available in—person and on—line: Drop-Ins and Appointments Writing consultants are available to help students with any writing assignment. Consultations are free and appointments are not necessary. Simply stop by any location and a writing consultant will help with: - Brainstorming ideas for a paper - Helping a writer get his or her thoughts down on paper 0 Organizing ideas - Revising a paper so it stays focused - Ensuring a paper meets the needs and expectations of an academic audience - Editing and polishing a draft - Avoiding plagiarism when incorporating research into a paper ' Documenting sources according to a particular style guide (such as APA, MLA, Chicago Style, or CBE) - If you prefer to make an appointment, please call (616) 331-2922. English as a Second Language and International Students can make standing, weekly appointments by Visiting the Writing Center to fill out a schedule request form. Online The Center offers two forms of online writing support: 0 Our GVSU Grammar Chat service is a quick way to get an answer to a grammar, punctuation. or documentation question. Simply log onto AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger and select the appropriate user ID for the Center: 0 AOL Instant Messenger ID: GVSU th Ctr 0 Yahoo! Messenger ID: GVSU_Writing_Center Send your question to the Center and a consultant on duty will respond. 0 Online consultations are especially convenient for students who cannot easily travel to our locations. Submit your paper online at www.gvsu.edu/wc and a consultant will respond within '72 hours with suggestions for revisions. Other Writing Resources for Students www.gvsu.edu/wc Link to online Sources that can help with everything from writing in particular disciplines to documenting sources correctly. You can also print handouts written by our consultants on any number of confounding writing issues. Writing Library Our Allendale location houses a library of books about writing resumes, graduate school admission statements, overcoming writer’s block, writing creative works, and documenting sources in APA, MLA, and other formats. Seminars and Workshops The Center offers occasional seminars and workshops on writing issues of interest to graduate and undergraduate students. See our Web site for information about upcoming workshops. Who are the Writing Consultants? All writing consultants are Grand Valley students who major and minor in disciplines across the university. New consultants participate in a two-day consulting strategies training session before beginning work for the Center. All consultants also fulfill several professional development requirements each semester. New undergraduate consultants are required to enroll in a one-credit academic course applicable to their work in the Center. Students interested in becoming writing consultants should visit our Web site to read more about the position and the application process, which occurs in the winter term each year. The Center provides a range of services to assist faculty and staff both as they assign writing in their classes and write for publication in their disciplines. Instructional Support Online and Print Resources Resources available Via the Center’s Web site for faculty to use in their classrooms include: 0 PowerPoint presentations on APA and MLA documentation 0 Handouts about a variety of punctuation and grammar issues - Links to writing resources for students writing in any discipline Faculty members also have access to the Center’s collection of books on the successful teaching of writing and faculty writing needs. Consultant-Led Peer Review Workshops The Center sends consultants into classrooms to assist students in responding to each other’s drafts of a particular assignment and understand how they might make revisions. Presentation of Center Services Consultants give 10-15 minute presentations geared toward encouraging students to use the Center in completing any writing assignment. Writing Support Faculty and Staff Writing Groups Each semester, the Center sponsors writing groups for faculty and staff who are working on dissertations, book manuscripts, articles, grant applications, or other writing projects. Faculty and staff wishing to join a writing group should contact the Center at 381-2922. Summer Faculty and Staff Writing Retreats Each summer, the Center sponsors week—long writing retreats for faculty working on large writing projects. More information about writing retreats can be found at the Center’s Web site, Welcome to the Fred Meijer Center for Writing and Michigan Authors Grand Valley State University’s Fred Meijer Center for Writing and Michigan Authors assists students and faculty with any writing— related activity, Our goal is to give writers the feedback and support they need to write successfully. We help writers by addressing their needs first, whether assisting with organizing information effectively for an academic audience, suggesting strategies for proofreading and editing, or asking questions to help writers think through complex ideas. We provide resources and programs to support the wide variety of writing in which Grand Valley’s students and faculty engage. Center Locations and Hours The Center is open during regular class days; we’re closed on holidays and between semesters. Our Web site, www.gvsu.edujwc, is updated with current hours.
