Lauren Hanrahan MKT 375-02 Position Paper 1 Due 3/3/10 Royal Caribbean’s Decision to Port in Haiti As an executive of Royal Caribbean cruise lines, I have made a formal decision to continue to port at Labadee in Haiti. Labadee is a privately owned beach approximately 100 miles away from Port du Prince, and was unaffected by the recent earthquake. I am well aware of the devastating events and tragic suffering that is currently taking place in Haiti. However, I still believe that it is far more beneficial to all to harbor in Labadee, than for Royal Caribbean cruise lines to not stop there at all. I mainly made this decision based off of the greatest happiness principle, under the utilitarian theory. The greatest happiness principle suggests that ethical dilemmas should be resolved by bring the greatest good to the greatest number of people. Cruises and resorts have had a tremendous positive effect on countries. Belize for example was a very poor and underdeveloped country until Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruises transformed it into a well known tourist attraction (Cruise Critic 2010).
