ECE 265A Midterm Fall 2005 This exam is open book, notes, etc. Please answer all questions in a UCSD Examination book. Sign this exam, and place it inside the exam book when you are done. Return both the exam and your answers at the end of the exam. We will not grade your exam if you do not return both the signed question and answer sheets. Please try to write neatly and legibly; points will be taken off for messy or sloppy work. This is a tough test. Don’t expect to get all answers correct. Just focus on the problems you can do well. 1) 40 pts: The “Level-0” BJT model that we proposed in class is excellent for high-speed design, but is not as good for lower frequency work. The model can be improved by replacing Cbe with a resistor r π as shown in Fig. 1, whose value is β /gm, where β is the dc current gain of the device (typically around 100). Unfortunately, there is also a shot noise current source in parallel with this resistor, which degrades the noise performance of the amplifier. This noise source is uncorrelated
