ECE 265A Final Examination Fall 2005 Please answer all questions in a UCSD Examination book. Sign this exam, and place it inside the exam book when you are done. Return both the exam and your answers at the end of the exam. We will not grade your exam if you do not return both the signed question and answer sheets. Please try to write neatly and legibly; points will be taken off for messy or sloppy work. This is a tough exam! Don’t be discouraged if you can’t answer all the questions. 1) 40 pts. An engineer at your company is given the job of designing a 2 GHz low- noise amplifier. Unfortunately, the engineer never took ECE265A, and so is confused about the role of impedance matching and noise performance. In particular, the engineer has heard that providing a conjugate match optimizes the power transfer to a circuit, and so places a 50 ohm resistor to ground at the input of the LNA of Fig. 1 (to “provide a conjugate match” at the input). With your superior training, you are able to point out the multiple errors. a. What is the transducer gain of this LNA with the 50 ohm resistor to ground at the input, and what is the transducer gain with the 50 ohm resistor removed? Did “impedance matching” the input improve the gain in this case? 8 pts b.
