ECE 265A Midterm Examination Nov. 6, 2002 Instructions: This is an open book examination. It will count for 30% of the final grade in the course. Please show all of your work. I cannot give you credit for what you “meant,” only for what you actually write on the page. Grades will be reduced for messy or sloppy work. Good luck!! 1. (25 pts) You are the supervisor of a Communications System Department in a large company, and a bright young engineer comes to you with an apparent paradox. Two amplifiers are cascaded – as shown in Fig. 1 – and the engineer is trying to figure out the overall Noise Figure of the circuit. The F of amplifier #1 (F1) is – by definition – the signal-to-noise ratio at the input divided by the signal-to-noise ratio at the output (SNR1/SNR2). Similarly, the F of amplifier #2 (F2e) is – by definition – the signal-to-noise ratio at the input divided by the signal-to-noise ratio at the output (SNR2/SNR3). By simple multiplication, the ratio of the SNR at the input to the SNR at the final output is F1*F2e. The engineer then
