Standard deviation calculations From your statistics course you will remember a standard deviation is a descriptive statistic. Its calculation  can take two forms: Population Standard Deviation (See p. 556) Sample Standard Deviation (See p. 557) These standard deviations can be calculated using any one of four different methods: (a) manually  calculating, using the standard deviation functions on a calculator, using a statistical software package,  and using Excel’s statistics functions. To calculate the sample standard deviation of a set of numbers using Excel:  (1) Enter the numbers on the spread sheet. (2) On a blank line select the Excel function “STDEV”. (3) Select the set of numbers you entered.  (4) Click OK.
