Recognition • Depending on what our interests and experience are we can recognize differences in style. – Can you tell where an outfit comes from just by looking at it? Do you know your designers? – Can you tell the difference between Green Day and the Sex Pistols? If you hear a new song by a familiar band can you guess who it belongs to without being told? – Would you confuse a film by Tarantino with one by Spielberg? Can you identify a Disney movie? – What makes “a Monet” a “Monet”?

Style and Literature • Authors and their works have signature elements too. • In literary study, when we talk about style we are referring to “the basic characteristics of the language of an author (or an age)” (Beaty 410). It is the “manner” and the “matter” together that creates style (410). • Familiarity will let you identify with confidence. Hemingway and Faulkner would not be confused by someone who has read them. Stephen King and Poe wouldn’t be confused.

Elements of Style Diction is the choice of words. It is divided into: – Formal diction: stylized, “fancy” language. Large vocabulary. – Informal: “everyday” written language of ordinary people. – Colloquial: informal language of ordinary people, as spoken by them. Think about slang, accents, idiom, etc. Rhetorical tropes: figures
