Root and shoot growth from these structures always originates from buds at the nodes. 1 1/13/11 Stems Types of stems Stolons – horizontal aboveground stems that because they are exposed to the light, normally produce new “daughter plants” with normal looking leaves and roots from buds at the nodes. Stems Types of stems Tubers – thickened underground stems on rhizomes modified for food storage that have nodes, internodes and modified leaf 6ssue, reduced to a papery scale ­like structure. Root and shoot growth from these structures always originates from buds at the nodes. Stems Types of stems Bulbs – underground leaf 6ssue modified for food storage borne on a stem plate. New bulbs and roots develop from this stem plate. 2 1/13/11 Roots Roots – lack nodes and internodes Roots Types of roots Tap – annual, biennial and simple perennial broadleaf plants Fibrous – most grasses and annual sedges Creeping – Many perennial grass ­like and broadleaf plants Roots Creeping reproduc6ve roots can grow horizontally or downward, develop buds randomly from the pericycle tend to penetrate soil deeper than underground stems.
