The cartoon below contains a sentence that is ambiguous , i.e. it can be understood in two ways. Draw two tree diagrams each of which shows one of the ways in which the sentence can be understood. DO NOT PUT PHRASE LABELS SUCH AS “NP”, “VP”, ETC. ON THE DIAGRAMS. Use unlabeled trees like those for “That butcher has smoked ham” on page 25 of the APS book. The sentence you are to diagram is modified a little from the actual sentence in the cartoon. First tree : “for nothing” has to be linked directly to “was (good)”. Second tree : “for nothing” has to be linked directly to “good”. Calvin was good for nothing. Calvin was good for nothing. Meaning: “he behaved well without any purpose”; Meaning: “Calvin was worthless”; it would answer it would answer the question of “WHY Calvin was good”. the question of “WHAT (kind of person) Calvin was”. 2. (1 point) Grammatical categories. The basis of the joke in the cartoon below is two possible interpretations of the word “longer”. What are the different grammatical categories that are being exploited in this cartoon to create the joke? Adjective vs. Adverb : The first speaker intends the adjective use describing her skirts. Andy’s wife intend the adverb use, describing duration of the action of wearing.
