ITP 125 Password Cracking Assigned: 12/1 Due: 12/8 Overview: In this lab, students will get the basic understanding of password cracking in Windows. Students will practice creating accounts in a Windows XP virtual machine, with a varying degree of password length and complexity. Students will be using the tool ophcrack , which utilizes the technique called Rainbow Tables . Instructions: 1. Create a new virtual machine, using the Windows XP ISO (any service pack version) a. Set the Hard Disk type as IDE, 6 GB, preallocate disk space. 2. Create user accounts a. In the virtual machine, go to Start Settings Users and Passwords b. If need be, check the box stating “Users must enter a name and password to use this computer” c. Click on the Add button to add a user d. For the user name, enter Test1. Click Next
