Session 1: Developing a Topic and Getting the Most from Research Sources and Tools Objectives/Learning Outcomes Students will know how to: *Identify a variety of types of potential sources of information S1 R2 *Develop preliminary strategies for searching information related to their topic S2 R1 *Identity ways of accessing and retrieving sources S3 S4 R3 *Identify items cited in bibliographies and know how to search and retrieve the items R4 *Identify the difference between a scholarly versus a popular source S4 R2 *Identify keywords, synonyms, and related terms for their research topic and recognize varying terms across disciplines S2 R3 *Develop effective search strategies within specific databases S3 S4 R3 *Evaluate sources for appropriateness for information need and/or research purpose \ S1 S5 R5 *Organize and manage citation information S6 R2 Module 1: Starting Smart Objectives/Learning Outcomes Students will know how to: *Identify a variety of information sources and selecting appropriate sources for information need *Identify characteristics of information on the Web *Identify characteristics of library Resources Activities: *Interactive game *Quiz Module 2: Choosing a Topic Objectives/Learning Outcomes Students will know how to: *Broaden or narrow a topic *Identifying keywords for a topic *Use connectors (i.e., AND, OR) and truncation in constructing a search *Understand the difference between keyword and subject searching Activities: *Brainstorming exercise *Quiz Module 1: Selecting a Topic Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Students will know how to: *Distinguish between research topics of appropriate scope and those that are likely too broad *Explain strategies for limiting Scope Activities: *Interactive exercises for developing
