Lab Assignments Assignments 1) Individual: Individual: Photosynthesis Lab a) The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to test the impact of light of different wavelengths on a plant’s ability to survive. This laboratory exercise requires preparation and set-up during Week 1. Submit a lab report in Week 5. b) Materials i) Clear, red, green, and blue transparent plastic (report folders work nicely) ii) clear tape iii) 12 large Styrofoam cups iv) Potting soil v) green bean seeds vi) water vii)a shallow box that is no deeper than the Styrofoam cup viii) unobstructed natural light source ix) metric ruler c) Method i) Prepare at the beginning of Week 1: ii) Cut three circles the size of the rim of a Styrofoam cup from each of the clear, red, green, and blue transparent plastic. iii) Poke three small holes, using only the tip of a pen or pencil, in the bottom of each of 12 styrofoam cups. iv) Loosely fill half of each Styrofoam cup with potting soil. v) Gently insert your finger into the soil at the center of each cup to the second crease of your finger but do not touch the bottom of the cup. vi) Place one bean seed in each hole and loosely cover the seed with more potting soil. vii)Add 2 tablespoons (29.6 mL) of water to each cup. viii) Place a circle of either clear or colored transparent plastic on top of each cup and tape down on two sides. There should be three cups with a clear plastic top, three cups with a red plastic top, three cups with a green plastic top, and three cups with a blue plastic top. ix) Randomly assort the 12 cups into the box and place where there is unobstructed light. x) Note the date of planting. xi) Add 2 tablespoons (29.6 mL) of water to each cup every three days. d) Data collection i) Note the date that the bean plant sprouted in each cup (7-10 days post planting). ii) Four days after the first plant has sprouted, carefully remove the colored plastic and measure the height (in mm) of the plant by inserting the metric ruler into the cup and measuring the height point of the plant as it stands freely. Count the number of leaves of all plants. Note any physical differences among the plants. Carefully recover the cup with the colored plastic. iii) Proceed until data from three different days has been collected.
