Chapter 20 Terms 1. Fort Sumter- Federal forts, mints, etc. seized by south. Only two left Sumter most important at most important sea port. Lincoln sent provision not reinforcement. South saw naval force coming as threat so they attacked. After 34 hour bombardment fort surrendered no deaths. Made North inclined for war 2. Border states - Border states very important Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri would have doubled manufacturing capacity and horses and mules. Awesome Ohio river flowed along Kentucky and WV. Lincoln used military to keep border states in Maryland and WV. Missouri had a local civil war 3. North’s War aims- not to free slaves but to unite the country. This way Lincoln could keep his border states 4. Robert E. Lee- knightly sense of honor southern ideal. Really good leader. Lincoln offered him command in north but he felt loyalty to home. 5. Stonewall Jackson- chief lieutenant of Lee gifted tactical theorist master of speed and deception 6. Ulysses S. Grant- Awesome to the max military leader led north to victory
