Chapter 23a Terms 1. Waving the Bloody Shirt- The Republicans got Grant elected (barely) by “ waving the bloody shirt ,” or reliving his war victories, and used his popularity to elect him, though his popular vote was only ahead of rival Horatio Seymour , the Democratic candidate who didn’t accept a redemption-of-greenbacks-for-maximum-value platform, and thus doomed his party. 2. Jim Fisk- Jim Fisk and Jay Gould devised a plot to drastically raise the price of the gold market in 1869 . On " Black Friday ," September 24, 1869, the two bought a large amount of gold, planning to sell it for a profit. In order to lower the high price of gold, the Treasury was forced to sell gold from its reserves. (2 and 3 are the same) 3. Jay Gould- In 1869, the pair (Gould and Fisk) concocted a plot to corner the gold market that would only work if the treasury stopped selling gold, so they worked on President Grant directly and through his brother-in-law, but their plan failed when the treasury sold gold. 4. William Marcy “Boss” Tweed- "Boss" Tweed employed bribery, graft, and fraudulent elections to milk New York of as a much as $200 million. ( Tweed Ring ) Tweed was eventually put into prison. He wore a bag of money on his head. 5. Thomas Nast- commonly known as "Boss" Tweed, was an American politician and head of Tammany Hall, the name given to the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in New York City politics from the 1790s to the 1860s. He was convicted and eventually imprisoned for stealing millions of dollars from the city through graft. 6.
