Chapter 40     B      Terms     1. Watergate break-in, June 1972     : June 17, 2 months before Nixon’s renomination, a bungled burglary had occurred  in the Democratic headquarters, located in the Watergate apartment-office complex in Washington; 5 men arrested  inside the building with electronic “bugging” equipment in their possession; they were working for the Republican  Committee for the Re-election of the President (CREEP) which had managed to raise tens of millions of dollars, often  by secretive, unethical, or unlawful means 2. White House plumbers     : Nixon’s aides had authorized a burglary of the files of Dr. Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist; so  great was the determination to destroy the man who had “leaked” the Pentagon Papers; this was the most notorious  exploit of the White House “plumbers unit” created to plug up leaks of confidential information 3. Senator Sam Ervin     : a select Senate committee, headed by aging Sam Ervin of N. Carolina, conducted a prolonged  and widely televised series of hearings in 1973-1974 4. John Dean III     : former White House lawyer with a remarkable memory, testified as to the involvement of the top  echelons in the White House, including the president, in the cover-up of the Watergate break-in; accused Nixon of the  crime of obstructing justice 5. Spiro Agnew     : forced to resign in October 1973 for taking bribes from Maryland contractors while governor and also
