Notes English 2/21/2011 Essays Characteristics -nonfiction -relatively short -point of view -specific theme -subject *essai-attempt –they were not reports they were a way for writers to explore their thoughts *Originally formalized in 1580, took off during Enlightenment era (magazine rise) Free Write Ecocriticism -Traits *relationship between literary studies and the environment *tries to figure out the roles that nature plays in the written text and how it can enhance a story or leave it limited *human culture is connected with the physical world *one foot on literature the other on land *the world is the entire atmosphere (writings on everything) *trying to have people realize that the earth is affected by our doings, we either live how it is and die or we must change it instantly *how people act will have an effect on the entire environment, vise versa *nature is a maternal figure that is something that protects us (mother figure) *place theory is present -nature is a machine that is something that people can fix
