Compose a paragraph about what the point of a virus is, and what it must do. Be as succinct and general as possible. Conclude by pointing out what is different between viruses and other “selfish” forms of DNA such as addiction modules. Why do many viruses, such as φ X174 or Q β , show selection for making the genome as small as possible? Why is it difficult to increase the genome size for viruses such as these or T4? What would have to be redesigned if you wanted to expand the genome of T4? Why is it easy to add extra genes to M13? Could you tell the difference between a “normal” M13 and one with extra genes by simply using TEM? Q β is a “+ strand RNA phage”—that is, the RNA that enters the cell is treated as mRNA. There are “-strand RNA phages,” in which the RNA that enters the cell is the template for replication. These phages typically put their RNA in the cell with a unique replicase enzyme. What does this enzyme do, and what would happen if it weren’t present? We have seen several different methods for timing phage gene expression.
