Unformatted text preview: The Circulatory System I The circulatory system consists of vascular and lymphatic system. Main function is the transportation of Fluids (blood and lymph) Arteries Veins Blood, vessels, and heart Lymph and lymphatic vessels 9 Water 9 Gases (0 2 , CO 2 ) 9 Nutrients (Carbs, fats, proteins) 9 Hormones (e.g. adrenalin, steroids) 9 Waste products to kidneys (e.g. urea) 9 Immune system cells and molecules (white blood cells, antibodies) 9 Body temperature and pH (homeostasis) 9 Acellular components: Plasma (50-55%) 9 Cellular components: Erythrocytes (red blood cells) Leucocytes (white blood cells) Platelets (thrombocytes) The Whole blood consists of- The Plasma Water: 80-90% Dissolved solids: 10% Blood proteins: globulins, albumins Nutrients: glucose, fats, fatty acids, amino acids, electrolytes Cellular Products : enzymes, antibodies, hormones Waste products : urea, salts transport of oxygen via oxygen-binding molecule: hemoglobin Each erythrocyte contains approx. 280 million hemoglobin molecules. Erythrocytes Blood Cells: Erythrocytes BIRDS, FISH nucleated and larger ote the nuclei in the erythrocytes. Mammals are the only class of vertebrates that lack nuclei in their red blood cells. MAMMALS small, anucleated (6-8 m x 2 m) Fish Birds Mammals Erythrocytes are produced in hematopoietic (=blood forming) tissues .
