Extracellular Matrix 65-80% of the wet weight of cartilage Contains gases, small proteins, metabolites and a high concentration of cations Interacts with matrix molecules – to contribute to the mechanical properties of the ECM Extracellular Matrix Water 60 % of the dry weight of cartilage Collagens 25-35% of the dry weight Large aggregating proteoglycan monomers Aggrecans Highly negatively Charges GAGs (glucosaminoglycans) Proteoglycans Other types: small proteoglycans: decorin, biglycan, fibromodulin
