Exoplanets (+Light) Light Light is Electromagnetic Radiation o Light has intensity o Light has color o A prism breaks light into its components forming a spectrum of light o In vacuum, light always travels at the same speed, irrespective of the color or the speed of the source o The speed of light in vacuum: c=299,792,458 m/s o Light is emitted and absorbed in packets of electromagnetic radiation energy called photons o The intensity of the Light corresponds to the amount of photons o Photons travel as waves o Light is the type of electromagnetic radiation that we can detect with our eyes. It is a small fraction of the Electromagnetic Spectrum Waves o A wave is a pattern of motion that can carry energy without carrying matter along with it. o Properties of waves Wavelength is the distance between two wave peaks. Frequency is the number of times per second that a wave vibrates up and down. Wave speed = wavelength × frequency Particles of Light o Particles of light are called photons. o Each photon has a wavelength and a frequency.

o The energy of a photon depends on its frequency. Electromagnetic Spectrum o The Electromagnetic Spectrum includes: Gamma rays, X-Rays, Ultraviolet Radiation, Light, Infrared Radiation, Microwaves, and Radio waves. o Gamma Rays are the most energetic type of radiation and Radio waves the weakest. o “Blue Photons” carry almost twice as much energy as “Red Photons”. A prism breaks light into its components forming a spectrum of light o Types of spectrum Continuous Spectrum The spectrum of a common (incandescent) light bulb spans all visible wavelengths, without interruption.
