PRINCIPLES OF PSYCHOLOGY2Principles of Psychology. It is said that the past is a point of references and not a point of focus. Psychology hasin a big way enabled me to understand certain aspects in my life regarding my character andchoice of association. My parents separated before I was born and as a result I ended up beingraised up by my mother and my step-father. Before my mother got re-married, I constantlyhad a deep feeling of missing something in my life. This was further extended when Ienrolled into my junior classes. Most of my classmates would give stories of their darlingfathers and how heroic they were and I would see them being carried as they drove home orduring parents meetings yet no one could stand in for me because my mother had to workextra hours to ensure I had everything I needed as she thought. I would constantly find myselfpicturing a father figure and ended up wishing any man before me would be my father. When I met my step-father, he was the excellent type of father figure I had beenlooking for and I was pretty much excited to have him around. Fast forward, things changedat a particular time. If it was not arguing and screaming at the highest vocals of their voices, itwas war. He would beat my mother severely and always made sure to punish me for thearguments they hard. It’s like he had a constant gleam of happiness whenever he saw usdistraught. Eventually, he died but left wounds in the heart of my mother, who ended upbeing bitter and constantly paraded my siblings and I with negative sentiments of ourworthlessness. For one, my vision of a father was broken, I saw a man as mean, irresponsibleand brutal person and with the fact that my biological father had been silent, I confirmed mymother’s sentiments on my worthlessness. This distorted my idea of a family. As I grew up, Ipreferred walking alone or engaging with those who were seen as less important in school orat home. My academics got affected and would only be jolted up if I got a glimpse of lovefrom a teacher or a friend or a rare positive statement from my mother.
