Ferris 1 Matthew Ferris Mrs. Wren Pre IB I-5 17 Apr. 2007 Comparison of Great Expectations and Their Eyes were Watching God On the surface, Great Expectations and Their Eyes were Watching God do not seem to have many things in common. However, when the novels plots and themes are compared in detail some unique parallels can be observed. Some of the novels themes relate to ideas about wealth, status and power while others take on more personal aspects. Janie and Pip are able to portray the common themes through their numerous experiences and hardships. From their experiences we see a unique relationship from two seemingly opposite novels. In Great Expectations Pip was brought up in a working class family which stressed that moral principles were more important than wealth and status. Pip, however, wanted to live a life in which he had money and was considered a gentleman. Later Pip discovers the situation he had before, with friends and family, was better than living in wealth. In the first stage of the novel, Pip showed his disgust of his house: “I would not have had Miss Havisham and Estella see it on any account” (Dickens 87) However, later when he matured, he changed his opinion. He described his house with anticipation and joy: “I went towards it under the sweet green limes, listening for the clink of Joe’s hammer… and the chestnut-trees were there, and their leaves rustled harmoniously when I stopped to listen” (Dickens 394).
