Chem 481 F10 Wood Final Exam Study Guide (11-22-2010) General and Specific: The exam will cover fatty acid and amino acid catabolism as well as, carbohydrate metabolism (glycogen, gluconeogenesis). It will be heavier on the material since the last exam. It will also cover other course material, but not in the depth as we have had on previous exams. The following is a guide to help you in your preparation for the exam. The reactions of glycolysis and the citric acid cycle form the core of metabolism. You need to know these reactions, the structures of their metabolites, the names of the enzymes catalyzing these reactions, and necessary cofactors for these reactions. This may sound like a lot, but I think you know this stuff. Knowing these core reactions makes it easier to understand lipid and amino acid catabolism using these reactions as a base. You do not need to know the mechanisms of the glycolysis or citric acid cycle reactions in the detail you did for the last exam. Biomolecules in general: You should be able to recognize the biomolecules that we have studied and know generally what roles they play in the metabolic scheme of things. Know the amino acids (you can’t very well talk about amino acid catabolism without this knowledge), the mono and disaccharides we studied, structures of glycogen and starches (again helpful for metabolism), and principle lipid structures (fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated), triacyl glycerides, principle glycerophospholipids (phosphatityl choline, etc.), be able to recognize sphingo lipids (sphingomyelin, ceramide, cerebroside), cholesterol. Be able recognize and identify the structures of the enzymatic cofactors we have encountered in our study of metabolism and know their functions (a general description is fine) and which reactions require them. Non-glucose carbohydrate metabolism: Know how glycogen is broken down by phosphorylase and debranching enzyme and how the resulting Glu-1-P is metabolized, be able to follow (meaning you do not have to memorize the information, but if the reactions are given, you need to be able to read what happened and have a good idea of why and how these steps would fit into the big picture of metabolism) how Fru and Man are metabolized, as well as, understand how Gal is dealt with Be able follow the alternative Glu metabolic pathway to the 5 carbon sugars (pentose phosphate pathway) and
