RESISTIVE EXERCISE MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMCXLIV. TERMINOLOGY A. Isometrics – fixed speed (0 o /second); immovable fixed resistance B. Isotonics – variable speed (approx. 60 o /second); fixed resistance (moveable) C. Isokinetics – fixed speed (0-450 o /second); accommodating resistance D. Closed Kinetic Chain – variable speed; fixed resistance; end segment is not free MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMCXLV. ISOMETRICS – stabilization (maintains a segment in a fixed position) . Advantages 1. Retards muscle atrophy (Does not prevent muscle atrophy) 2. Minimal joint irritation 3. Assists in decreasing swelling 4. Maintains neural association 5. Increases static muscle strength 6. Easy, simply, no equipment necessary 7. Applicable early in rehabilitation . Disadvantages 20688. Boring, tedious 20689. Angle specific – approx 20 o overflow 20690. Not effective for dynamic strength or endurance improvement MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMCXLVI. ISOTONICS Concentric Muscle Contraction . Involves a shortening muscle contraction where a muscle’s origin and insertion approximate . Accelerator Eccentric Muscle Contraction . Involves a lengthening muscle contraction where a muscle’s origin and insertion separate . Decelerator or Controller . Advantages of Isotonic exercise 32296. Functional 32297. Can be used early and late in rehab 32298. Can be inexpensive and available 32299. Patient motivation is easy

32300. Has concentric/eccentric component 32301. Can improve strength and endurance 32302. Objective 32303. Improves neurophysiological system . Disadvantages 552. Loads muscle at its weakest point in ROM 553. Safety 554. Can be traumatic (synovitis)
