Problems of Contemporary Democracies
Evaluation of a post-democratic society entails analysis of how countries established and
continues to enforce the institutions associated with democracy strictly. This term has often been
used when evaluating how democracy has been misused in various regions to represent a mere
formality that hides smaller circles where political and economic elites run the affairs of the
government.
Democracy has seen both success and failure entering the 21st century. According to
Couch, the evaluation presents a paradox where the number of countries adopting formal
democratic systems of elections has increased (1). In contrast, the polls are not strictly free and
fair. In this sense, the concept of democracy loses its liberal sense of giving power to the people
because their decisions are manipulated. Mair observes that a few have hijacked parties so that
they no longer serve the interests of the citizens and, in turn, weakening democracy (1).
