Religion 122 (Section 46) Book of Mormon Alma 30 – Moroni 10 MW 11:00 to 11:50 B-135 JFSB J. Michael Pinegar TA: Josh Manwaring Office: 614 TNRB Email: [email protected] Telephone: 422-3088 If urgent, you may text or call: Email: [email protected] 801-824-3339 Office Hours: Friday 1:00 to 3:00 I am excited to teach this Book of Mormon class. Since 1988, my main responsibility at BYU has been to teach finance in the Marriott School. Before coming to BYU, I taught finance at the University of Iowa for six years. I am grateful to include the Book of Mormon in my teaching responsibilities. I love the Book of Mormon and have a testimony of its truthfulness. My hope is that this class will strengthen your testimony and mine of the divine origin of the Book of Mormon and of the divinity of its central figure, the Savior. Textbooks The two required textbooks are: The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ Book of Mormon Student Manual for Religion 121 and 122 Class Organization: Scripture Journal: Elder Richard G. Scott taught, “Knowledge carefully recorded is knowledge available in time of need. Spiritually sensitive information should be kept in a sacred place that communicates to the Lord how you treasure it. This practice enhances the likelihood of your receiving further light” (“Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge,” Ensign , Nov. 1993, 86). In keeping with Elder Scott’s teaching, please hand in a shareable new insight about the day’s reading assignment at the beginning of every class. This journal entry must be typed, preferably double-spaced and in 12 pitch font. Note that this assignment asks for a new insight – not an insight gained previously. Emailed assignments or assignments submitted after the due date will not be accepted. The form for submitting the journal is included at the end of the schedule of readings on this syllabus. Please use this form every day. At the end of the semester, you will receive a bound copy of your journal entries throughout the semester. Quizzes : There will be a timed, closed book Blackboard quiz about every other class period as noted below. The first question on each quiz will be whether or not you have read the assigned reading. This is an “honor code” question to which you can only answer “yes” if you have read the material this semester. Past readings do not count. The other quiz questions will be based primarily on our class discussions
