MComm 320 – Winter 2006 GRAMMAR ISSUES RAISED BY GROUP PRESENTATIONS I. Punctuation A. Comma use with nonessential, or interrupting, sentence elements 1. According to Dr. Baker He uses the term “essential appositive” to describe words that are needed to make the sentence clear and “nonessential” as those words that provide additional but nonessential information. He uses these examples: Nonessential: “I’d like you to meet Gary, my second- oldest son, who will be traveling with us.” Essential: “My son Gary is the person you’ll meet this morning.” 2. According to Ober He has divided his advice regarding this type of comma use into these two rules (2.6 and 2.7): Rule 2.6 Nonrestrictive Expressions: use commas before and after a nonrestrictive expression (may be omitted without changing the meaning of the sentence), but do not use commas before and after restrictive expressions (which limits the meaning of the noun or pronoun that follows it).
