BIAS-FREE LANGUAGE 1. Refer to a group by the term it prefers: African-American or black (not colored, or Negro) Asian (not Oriental) Latino or Hispanic (not Mexican) Senior citizen (not old person) 2. Focus on people, not their condition: People with mental retardation (not mentally retarded people) People with vision impairments (not the blind) People being treated for cancer (not cancer patients)
