R EADING S MALL E NGLISH 292 H ORROCKS D UE : Friday, February 4 F ORMAT : 2-3 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, MLA heading, justified left only P OINTS P OSSIBLE : 50 (-5 if submitted without scratch outline) A SSIGNMENT : For your first writing assignment in 292, you will need to compose a 2-3 page formal analysis by performing a close reading like those we’ve done as we’ve annotated texts together in class. You must choose one of the works below (all in your Norton anthologies) to analyze. Step One: To begin your “small reading,” go through the piece line by line, word by word, even comma by comma, examining every part of it. Pay attention to its language, its structure, its literary devices, and its themes. Notice its rhythm and rhyme schemes, its symbols, metaphors, similes, and consider how each image functions, why each variation of the rhyme scheme is important, what each metaphor accomplishes. Try to address all the formal elements of the text, and be sure to make notes as you proceed.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
