Unformatted text preview: Kilie Rainey In Class Essay #2 Feb. 10, 2011 Mrs. Marler Up the Down Staircase In Class Essay #2 Weird Novel Format In the novel Up The Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman, the plot is proceeded to the climax largely through memos from the office, fragments of notes dropped in the trash can, essays that are handed in to be graded, lesson plans, suggestions dropped in the class suggestion box, and letters written by Barrett to a friend from college, who chose to get married and start a family rather than pursue a career. While starting the novel it would had been hard to follow having not read the introduction by the author. In the introduction we get to know Bel as a person and realize that she had to fight to keep her novel written the way that it was. Not many publishers wanted to print a book in this particular format, however the novel seems to clearly paint a picture. The picture of the school, and the lively way of the students, even the role of women in the 1960s as Slyvia...
