Chapter 41 Vocabulary John Edgar Hoover was an influential but controversial director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He was the founder of the present form of the agency, and remained director for 49 years until his death in 1972, at age 77. During his life he was highly regarded by the US public, but in the years since his death many allegations have tarnished his image. The Berlin Wall was a separation barrier between West Berlin and East Germany. The Iron Curtain. Charles de Gaulle in France was a French military leader and statesman. Green Berets is a term for United States Army Special Forces which were in the Vietnam War. The Alliance for Progress initiated by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961 aimed to establish economic cooperation between North and South America. The aid was intended to counter the perceived emerging communist threat from Cuba to U.S. interests and dominance in the region. The 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful United States-planned and funded attempted invasion by armed Cuban exiles in southwest Cuba. The United States embargo against Cuba is an economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on Cuba on February 7, 1962. It was codified into law in 1992 with the stated purpose of bringing democracy to the Cuban people, and in fact is entitled The Cuban Democracy Act. Still in effect today.
