MMW2, Winter 2010 Writing Assignment 1 (duBois track) Length : 4-6 pages Due date : Tuesday, January 26, and Wednesday, January 27, in section Text : Job Context: The Book of Job in the Hebrew Bible tells the well-known story of a pious man who endures horrific and seemingly undeserved misfortune. Job never blames his deity for his suffering; as editor David Damrosch points out, he steadfastly “rejects his wife’s advice to ‘curse God and die’” (125). He does, however, express his despair, and he insists that he deserves an explanation for everything he has endured. Eventually, Job receives a response, though not a comforting one: God answers Job “out of the whirlwind,” making a long and angry speech in which he contrasts his own might with Job’s insignificance. While Job is ultimately restored to his deity’s favor—according to the author of Job, “the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning” (Job 139)— it is unclear whether the reason for his affliction is ever explained. Damrosch argues that it is not,
