Basic info. on Congress bicameral: why two chambers? Practical and philosophical reasons. Know each. House of Representatives: 2 year terms Senate: 6 year terms – these terms are staggered. Know what that means. Congressional organization: Leadership – know leadership positions and who is currently in the positions, particularly the Speaker of the House committee/subcommittees: know types of committees staff What are the advantages of being the majority party? Control the agenda Assign committee chairs Appoint key leaders Oversight of executive branch Congressional functions Lawmaking – know the basic steps of how a bill becomes law Representing – ceremonial appearances, speeches, etc delegates vs. trustees – attendance check result on a national lottery – class wanted members of congress to act as delegates Congressional elections: two important regularities
