Become the dominant religion in Europe With Christianity comes an ideological. To be Western is to be part of this Christian culture and community. The Split- Catholic vs. Orthodox (Western and Eastern Christianity) West in 1450 o Latin Christian (Roman Catholic) o Hierarchical Great chain of Being Church hierarchy Patriarchy Guild system The dominant economical system Labor unions for the bosses They set who could produce, how much they could produce, and at what price they could sell it o Politically decentralized (feudal) o Commercial (or at least beginning to be) The Hanseatic League- Touring the West I. England Peter Bradford left because England was going through a civil war In 1453, England ended the 100 Years War with Spain (England lost) There was political instability and a weakened financial and economic power In 1455, a civil war (War of the Roses) began. It lasted 30 years Bradford set sail for Spain in 1460 His brother, Arthur, went to Danzig II. Danzig (Gdansk) Heart of the West because of the Hanseatic League o The HL had its own army and navy o It was linked by rivers III. Spain (the Iberian Peninsula) Bradford didnt like Spain because the cities were too foreign and too familiar o Too foreign because of the legacy of Muslim rule o Too familiar because two of the kingdoms were fighting each other Bradford crossed the Pyrenees Mountains into France IV. France A national monarchy The French king had been weakened by the 100 Years War Bradford told his father that France was a war ravished country so he moved onto Germany V. Germany Centered on the Holy Roman Empire o Called an empire because technically there was an emperor o However, it was a collection of many small independent territories o It was unstable because the territories rulers were really in power o There was always warfare because warfare and marriage were the only ways to expand your territory Austria o Largest amount of uncontested territory o Most stable territory in Holy Roman Empire Bradford likes Austria but decides to go to Italy rather than Constantinople (because of the Turkish War- Ottoman [Islamic] Empire) VI. VII. Oops 3 decades after Peter Bradford arrived, the Italian peninsula was invaded by armies (lasted 60 years 1490-1550) Arthur in Danzig the HL disintegrated Bradford chose a declining (rather than a rising) political structure...
