Most towns had a giant plaza in the middle of the town; government and public buildings surrounded the Plaza. Then on the outskirts of the plaza that was were all the houses were built. Because there was no effective mode of transportation it was vital for everyone to be as close to the center of town as possible. The city of Teotihuacan developed apartments complexes to keep people close to the plaza. Many cities today are built around a downtown area that is were a lot of people close to the plaza....
