PSYCHEDELIC DRUGS AND HALLUCINOGENS Julien pgs. 588 – 625 Psychedelic drugs, general: - induce “out-of-body” experiences and hallucinations, accompanied by alterations in cortical functioning, cognition, perception, and mood - illusory phenomena and perceptual distortions more common than true hallucinations - heighten awareness of sensory input, enhance clarity and diminish control over what is experienced - most resemble one of four NTs: acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin Anticholinergic Psychedelics - scopolamine is an acetylcholine receptor antagonist, blocks access of NT to receptors - found in travel sickness products - widely distributed in nature - unlike most psychedelics, it does not expand sensory perception, but rather clouds consciousness and produces amnesia, functioning as a deliriant and intoxicant - induces anticholinergic syndrome, with dry mouth, reduced sweating, dry skin, blurry vision, increased body temp, dilated pupils, tachycardia and hypertension - makes one “hot as a hare, blind as a bat, dry as a bone, red as a beet, and mad as a hen.” Catecholaminelike Psychedelics: norepinephrine- and dopamine-like drugs - confer psychedelic properties on top of amphetaminelike psychostimulant properties, enhance energy, endurance, sociability and sexual arousal - psychedelic effects probably due to augmentation of serotonin neurotransmission - classified as “mixed dopamine and serotonin agonists” - Mescaline - also called peyote, found as the dried top of this cactus plant, taken by softening in the mouth and swallowing - structurally resembles norepinephrine - rapidly, completely absorbed reaching peak brain levels within 1-2 hours - not metabolized before excretion
