ANABOLIC STEROIDS Julien pgs. 626- 644 - synthetic substances that mimic/are related to testosterone, the male sex hormone - have muscle-building (anabolic) and masculinizing effects (eg, hair growth, lower voice, what happens during puberty) and are used to increase muscle mass and strength, endurance, enhance physical appearance (esp. for younger boys) and athletic performance. - used and abused by athletes and non-athletes, females and males, from high school and up - some are classified as illegal substances by the FDA - prescribed uses include: treatment of delayed puberty, prevention of weight-loss in individuals with other disorders like HIV, and to counter the effects of malnutrition - biology : - testosterone is regulated by a negative feedback mechanism involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and the testes: low levels of testosterone hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing factor (GRF) pituitary stimulated to release follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH)
