Unformatted text preview: Your Name: Your TAs Name: Lab Section (Day, am/pm) Written Homework #1: Must be turned in by inserting into the proper box outside of Baker 131 before 2 pm on Friday September 17, 2009. Show all work on these pages or on the back of these pages. There are 4 pages. Carefully and neatly show the progression of the logic, formulas and math that you use. No credit for correct answers with no or irrelevant work. 1. 15 points (In a 90 minute preliminary exam, you would be expected to finish this problem in 25 minutes or less.) An alloy of two metals, A and B, and can be made by mixing; the desired ratios of A and B, heating them to form a molten solution, and then cooling to form a uniform solid with stoichiometry of AXB(1_X), where 0 < x <1 1. Note that the chemical formulas of alloys do not generally have integer subscripts, rather x is a continuous variable. Such alloys are also called solid solutions. The subscript x is called the mole fraction. More formally if one uses 11 moles of A and m moles of B, then the mole fraction ofA is n/(n + m). An iron-aluminum alloy can be analyzed to determine the relative amounts of iron and aluminum by digesting a sample with excess hydrochloric acid. The relevant reactions are: Fe (s) + 2 HCl (aq) 9 FeClz (aq) + H2, (g) 2 Al (3) + 6 HCl (aq) 9 2 A1C13 (aq) + 3 H2 (g) When the reaction is complete the entire alloy is consumed and the chloride products are completely soluble (dissolved) in the acidic solution (excess HCl). When all the H2 (g) is collected from digesting a 1.97 g sample of a specific iron—aluminum alloy, the gas weighs 0.110 g. What is the mole fraction x in the formula for the alloy: Alee(,..x)) ? It was first synthesized in the laboratory from another more common plant derived organic substance, tropinone. The molecular formula of tr'opinone is C8H13NO.
