Lecture 12 => Review of Lecture 11 (Multi electron Atoms) Afb d th Pl i El i Pi i l The Aufbau process and the Pauli Exclusion Principle: Build up the elements starting from H by sequentially ding one proton to the nucleus (neutrons as well but not adding one proton to the nucleus (neutrons as well, but not important for orbitals) and one electron to the lowest energy “unfilled” orbital. But the Pauli exclusion principle says that each electron must have a different set of quantum numbers (n, l, m, m s ) . m s is the spin quantum number (+ ½ or – ½). This is just how electrons behave (weird)! Sequence: 1s 2 |2s 2 2p 6 | 3s 2 3p 6 | 4s 2 3d 10 4p 6 | 5s 2 4d 10 5p 6 | 6s 2 ….. Period: 1 st 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5 th 6 th For ground state: Hund’s rule = maximize spin in a subshell
