ANTH 1001 Feb.8 Influences on allele frequencies 1. Mutation 2. Gene flow 3. Genetic drift - changes in allele frequencies caused by random events a. Bottleneck effect - when you have a large genetically diverse population suddenly reduced in size; when the population rebounds it’s based on only genetic diversity of small population that is left b. Founder effect - starting with small group; small group will separate themselves from a larger population and will start or found a new colony/ population somewhere else; succeeding generation based on founders; the frequency in descending population will be disproportionately higher in small population - Ellis- Van Creveled Syndrome (EVCS) - mendelian recessive disorder; dwarfism, extra fingers and/or extra toes 4. Natural Selection - biological variation leading to differential reproductive success under specific circumstances - Sickle cell allele- caused by mutation; results in hemoglobin deficiency; can result in blockage of arteries; can cause pain; can kill you
