GEOG 1001 Feb.19 Berlin: Building the Wall: 1961 Cold War: 1945-1991 Between 1949- 1961 2.5 million East Germans fled from East to West Germany Construction began August 12, 1961 Built by the GDR (German Democratic Republic) to stop East Berliners escaping from the Soviet- controlled East German state into the west of the city, which was then occupied by the American, British and French Life with the Wall: 1961-1990 Lasted 28 years as the “iron curtain” and a symbol of communist oppression Made of concrete walls up to 15 feet high, topped with barbed wire and guarded with watchtowers and machine guns. Thousands of East Germans were captured during attempted crossings and 191 were killed. Little media getting out of East Germany Reunification: 1990 International Pressure: In a speech at the Brandenburg Gate commemorating the 750 th anniversary of Berlin on June 12, 1987, Raegan challenged Gorbachev, then the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, to tear it down
